The purpose of the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is to alter the shape of the knee so that there is no longer a need for the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL). The top of the tibia is cut with a circular shaped blade to allow for rotation of the top of the tibia so that it can sit in a more level position. Once the top of the tibia is rotated to a level position, it is stabilized with a bone plate and screws. After a successful TPLO, the knee is mechanically stable with no need for the CrCL. Once the tibial bone heals (usually about 8 weeks), the majority of the healing from the surgery is done.

The TPLO procedure can be performed on dogs ranging from approximately 10 lbs to over 200 lbs.

We offer cold laser therapy to help decrease swelling and inflammation and speed up the recovery from TPLO surgery. Ask your veterinarian about physical therapy and other modalities that can also help speed up the healing process and facilitate return to full function after surgery.

Typical post-op recovery recommendations for a TPLO span the first 8-12 weeks.
